02 / THE ARTIST
DEAN ROBERTS / ABSENT MAKER
Setting ego aside.
Letting the painting lead.
Dean Roberts is the artist behind Absent Maker. The name reflects his approach to painting: a separation from ego, a commitment to being present, and a willingness to witness the work as it unfolds.
His paintings move between flowing, organic forms and direct, expressive gestures. Color, texture, and movement give shape to things that can be difficult to put into words.
For Dean, the experience behind a painting is personal. The invitation to the viewer is open—to feel something of their own, or discover a possibility they hadn't considered before.
Why I make art03 / IN MY OWN WORDS
On presence, inner emotion,
and what connects us.
To me, Absent Maker means a separation from ego. To be in the moment as a witness to the work being done—letting the painting tell me where to go and when it's finished.
There was an internal battle going on. Something was missing. I wanted to express myself, but I didn't know how.
Usually, I start with a few strokes. I see a pattern, or follow a feeling of motion, uncovering the painting as I go. Even when I start with an idea, it never ends with that idea. It normally becomes something different.
I stop when the painting feels full, when frustration or ego starts creeping in, or simply when it feels done.
My hope is to connect with what makes us human: our inner emotions, something spiritual in nature beyond material things. Beyond borders, race, countries, or gender. Just human at the core.
I hope someone can feel a human experience of their own. It doesn't have to be what I felt, because that is personal to me. Maybe the painting can be a key to open something new they have never thought of.
